By the grace of God, I have been enrolled in the Mental Health Integration for Chaplain Services (MHICS) program at Vanderbilt University since August 2023. I am filled with passion for this diverse community in which I live and serve. I have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms and have been in counseling and treatment for several years. My desire was and still is to develop a broader understanding of mental health. I have the knowledge to utilize my training to better serve those with whom I interact. I consistently practice Brené Brown’s empathy approach, by going into those dark places with those who are suffering. I continue to exercise the ministry of presence. For example, Matt Sanders expressed, “Our presence to one another is a very important part of the healing process.”
Mental health issues and evidence-based practices significantly impact how I extend chaplaincy care. As I continue to work closely with the mental health providers, physicians, nurses, social workers, and administrative team for the care and well-being of each patient, family member, and staff, I am better equipped to provide support and/or pastoral care. I do so with the thought in mind; what might be essential, spiritual, emotional issues and/or concerns, and care plan thereof that would benefit other disciplines as well as integrate within the total holistic approach to providing pastoral care.
