Income Differentials & Gender Inequalities

This study focuses on Dar es Salaam women with higher incomes than their husbands. The research exposes the social construction of gender relations in everyday life, and outlines the contradictory and dynamic character of these gender relations in an urban and social context which is undergoing continual transformation. The voices of individual men and women are included, reflecting the viewpoint of ordinary people, but also some from the middle class. Direct quotations facilitate an understanding of their perspectives and ideas, and provide empirical evidence which exposes the discriminatory nature of the sex/gender system.
